Word Counter FAQ

Answers about word count, character count, multilingual text and privacy.

What is a word counter?

A word counter counts the number of words in text you type or paste. It is useful for essays, articles, assignments, resumes, applications and any writing with a word limit.

What is a character counter?

A character counter measures the number of characters in your text. This tool shows characters both with spaces and without spaces, and it can also work as a simple letter counter.

How do I check the word count of text?

Paste or type your text into the box above. The word count checker updates automatically, so you can see the number of words immediately while you write or edit.

How many words is this text?

Paste the text into the counter and look at the Words result. You can use it for a sentence, paragraph, essay, article or any longer piece of writing.

How many characters is this text?

The Characters result shows the full character count. A second result shows characters without spaces, which is useful when a form or platform uses a stricter character limit.

Is this a free online word counter?

Yes. The word counter and character counter are free to use online and do not require an account. Results update live in your browser.

How are words counted?

In modern browsers, the tool uses language-aware word segmentation and counts segments identified as words. If that feature is unavailable, it falls back to whitespace-based counting.

Does it work with Chinese, Japanese and Thai?

Yes. Modern browsers can segment text in languages that do not place spaces between every word. The counter also supports language-aware segmentation for Khmer and Myanmar text.

How are characters counted?

Where supported, the counter uses grapheme segmentation so a visible character can count as one even when it is made from multiple Unicode code points.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is estimated from the detected word count using a typical reading speed. Speaking time uses a slower presentation-style pace. Both are approximate.

Does this word counter store my text?

No. The counting and text analysis run in your browser. The text you enter is not submitted to the server by the counter.

Why can my count differ from Microsoft Word or Google Docs?

Different tools can use different rules for contractions, hyphenated terms, punctuation, symbols and language segmentation. Small differences between word counters are normal.
